Servers and services
Last updated: November 2022
The DNS role provides DNS (powerdns) for all the domains on your Enhance cluster.
Unlike other roles, websites are not mapped to a specific DNS role instance. Instead all DNS role instances serve all zones on the platform. If a DNS role is added to an existing estate it will automatically pick up all existing domains
Installing DNS role
ℹ️ To run the DNS role on a server allow port 53 on your firewall.
The DNS role can be installed on an existing or new server
To add a backup role to a new or existing server
- Click 'Servers' in the left side bar
- Choose the server that you want to add the backup role to
- Click 'Add role' and select the 'DNS' check box. Complete the form and hit 'Add role'
ℹ️ You can navigate away from the server page when a service is being installed and you will be notified when the installation is completed.
Nameserver domain mappings
You can map one domain to each instance of the DNS role that you have installed within your estate.
These mappings will be included as NS records in the DNS zone whenever you or your customer creates a new website or domain alias.
For each mapped domain you will need to create a glue record with the domain registrar for the domain on which the nameservers are based.
Your resellers can do the same in order to create branded name servers.
ℹ️ Any name servers which do not have a nameserver domain mapped to them will still serve your zones but will not be present in the NS records of your customer domains.
To add a domain server mapping:
- Click 'Settings' in the left side bar
- Select 'Platform' and navigate to the 'Nameservers' card
- Input your nameserver into the field and select 'Add'
ℹ️ A Nameserver domain mapping can not be deleted because it already exists in a customer DNS Zone. It is possible to edit an existing name server domain mapping. Any edits made will automatically be reflected in a customers DNS zone.
